Politics GeneralJust before I was about to drive away from the grocery store today after I had finished loading my purchases and was sitting in the front seat with the window down, an unkempt looking man approached me and gave me a rambling story about how he and his wife were lost. I grew tired of listening to him so I cut him off, showed him my portable GPS unit and said, "Lost? I’d be happy to give you directions. Where are you going?" Of course I fully expected what came next. He said, "Oh no I don’t need directions, you see I’m outta gas and I only need a couple of bucks to make it home." I explained to the man that I am tired of getting asked this question every day, sometimes several times a day and that I believed that there was a high probability that his story was a lie. The man called me an asshole and walked away cursing.

The man was right though, according to popular opinion I would be considered an asshole. But I’ve thought about it quite a lot and I ultimately came to the conclusion that giving money to beggars enables them and in fact encourages them to continue to live off of the work of others. I recently promised myself that I would do my best to answer "no" boldly and honestly whenever anyone tries to rob me at guilt-point. By blatantly refusing to give the man money I have denied him a piece of his entitlement check and have put on display what any rational person has always known in the back of his mind which is the fact that I am morally right for doing so. It is my money, I earned it and I have the indomitable right to do with it as I please. If enough people were to follow my lead the man may even seek a job one day.

As I left the store I came to the realization that I hear a similar story almost every time I leave the house. I’m not a statistician but does anyone else out there feel as if there are more bottom feeders out there than there used to be? The prevailing mantra that "it takes a village", that "I am my brother’s keeper" and that we are each responsible for the well being of those around us is a misleading concept that presupposes that it is possible to have a financial circle of trust so to speak in which every man in the circle sits on the lap of the man behind him and that the circle will be supported in this way. This idea fails to take into account the fact that there are those among us who are more productive and more responsible than others and that there are those among us who are irresponsible and who are not productive. It also fails to recognize the fact that the more handouts we give out, the less people care about being productive.

In the spirit of Marxism and for the sake of our "circle of trust" analogy, let us take "from each according to his ability, (give) to each according to his need" and see what the circle looks like when we’re done. According to the latest statistics released by the IRS for the year of 2005, let us imagine for simplicity’s sake a circle of trust composed of 100 people. One person equals one percent. According to the data, the top 50% of wage earners pay 97% of all income taxes. (For simplicity’s sake I will suppose that the top 53% of wage earners pay 100% of all of the taxes.) For our circle this means that 47 people (100% - 53%) are unable to support their own weight and so must sit on the lap of another without supporting the weight of another man on his lap. The strongest man in the circle (the top 1% of wage earners) has 38 of these people sitting on his right leg while his left supports the man in front of him in the circle. The next 4 strongest men in the circle (the top 5% minus the top 1%) have 4 people sitting on each of their right legs while their left legs support the man in front of him in the circle. The next 33 strongest men each support the weight of the man sitting in front of him in the circle. (I separated the top 13% and the bottom 12% (13 + 12 = 25) because each one percent man in the bottom 25% of the top 50% of all wage earners pays less than 1% of all income tax. For the sake of the analogy I could not cut several men into little pieces.) This leaves 59 men (47 + the bottom 12 of the top 50%) sitting on the right legs of others or approximately 59% of all wage earners pay almost no income taxes. 41 men support the weight of the entire circle.

If we were to spread taxes around evenly so that everyone pays the same percentile, this would mean that the top 5% of wage earners pay the taxes for the bottom 47%. The top 5% of all wage earners support the bottom 47. Now remember, these numbers are from 2005. What do you think the numbers would look like today? On top of that, the liberals are telling us that the strong men in the circle can support the weight of even more people and have plans to implement tax measures that will remove even more men from the structural support of the circle over to sit on the laps of the same strong men who are already supporting so many. They would have you believe that it is unfair to have only 59 men in the circle who get a free ride on the backs of the other 41. Perhaps the circle would be more stable if it were supported by 35 men instead of 41. How long do you think this "circle of trust" will hold? Just imagine what it would look like; half of it would look like a circle of trust, the other half would look like a dog pile of people! Is this what "trickle up" economics looks like?

Personally I would like to propose obliterating the current tax system altogether and implementing a federal sales tax similar to the fair tax but without the "progressive" prebate. I would suggest that everyone in the damned circle just stand up and support their own weight on their own two legs but that would just be too simple wouldn’t it?
