Republican Congressmen Re-Introduce Assault Weapons Ban Bill
Posted on Monday, November 17 @ 04:11:32 EST
Topic: Gun Rights
Gun RightsIn June, Rep. Mark Kirk (R) of Illinois introduced a bill proposing the reinstitution of the "Assault Weapons Ban" originally enacted in 1994 by the Clinton administration. The original bill was allowed to expire in 2004 because it was proven to have no effect on gun crime. If you can remember, the bill bans firearms that look like automatic weapons such as the AR-15. What lawmakers expect to accomplish through the reinstatement of this discredited ban makes no sense to me; These weapons are no more dangerous than hunting rifles or average handguns. Sure they could be illegally converted to full-automatic weapons, but so can your standard 9mm pistol.

The bill has 5 Republican cosponsors:

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL)
Rep. Michael Ferguson (R-NJ)
Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT)
Rep. Michael Castle (R-DE)

On a side note, I would like to mention that because the AR-15 is the semi-automatic civilian version of the M-16, many of the people who purchase these weapons are military members who use them for personal training to keep their skills sharp while they are not in the field. Not to mention the fact that many military bases use AR-15s for actual qualifications to begin with. Banning these weapons would undoubtedly have a minor effect on the combat readiness of our military.

Maybe the liberal media has a point when it talks about the Republican party falling apart... These reps need to get the boot.
